About

The Schools Poultry Competition offers a unique hands-on educational experience for students and can assist with developing new skills, encouraging responsible behaviour and inspiring new interests and career options.

Conducted by The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV), the Royal Melbourne Show Schools Poultry Competition, gives students the opportunity to raise and care for young hens, tracking their performance and preparing them for judging by commercial egg industry experts.

Schools who participate will be given six young brown commercial pullet chickens in June, thanks to Hy-Line Australia, to raise before being assessed on three elements:

  • Presentation of the exhibits (birds)
  • Egg laying
  • Project worksheets

Students will have the opportunity to learn about handling, feeding and caring for poultry as well as gaining an insight into the commercial poultry industry and a wider understanding of the agricultural industry in Victoria.

The competition entries will be displayed in front of around 450,000 visitors to the Royal Melbourne Show from 23 September - 3 October 2017 at Melbourne Showgrounds.
