Akers Flock takes home Supreme Champion in Show

Akers Flock of Tallygaroopna has taken home the coveted G J Sheppard Memorial Award for Supreme Champion in Show at the 2017 Royal Melbourne Poultry Show, for their Black and White Duck.

The Akers family has been breeding poultry and waterfowl for three generations, spanning over 80 years.

They were awarded a number of titles over the weekend, including Grand Champion Field and Forest, Champion Bantam Waterfowl, Champion Heavy Waterfowl, Champion Rouen and Champion Duck Indian Runner.

Conducted by The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV), the 2017 Royal Melbourne Poultry Show was held on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 July at Melbourne Showgrounds and saw over 1500 birds from 118 exhibitors compete.

“We congratulate Akers Flock on winning Supreme Champion in Show at the 2017 Royal Melbourne Poultry Show,” said RASV CEO, Mark O’Sullivan.

“The Akers family has seen much success exhibiting at the Royal Melbourne Poultry Show over the years, but this is the first time they have taken out the Supreme Champion in Show title.” Said Mr O’Sullivan.

To celebrate the Chinese Zodiac Year of the Rooster, a special prize was awarded to Best Rooster in Show.

This prize was also awarded to Akers Flock by guest judge, Cr Philip Le Lieu from the City of Melbourne.

The Royal Melbourne Poultry Show is one of the most prestigious fanciers’ competitions in Australia, providing breeders with an opportunity to benchmark their birds with a full range of Australian Poultry Standard classes available to enter.

The 2017 Royal Melbourne Poultry Show was presided over by a team of respectable and recognised judges.

More than 100 breeds of poultry, including ducks, geese, guinea fowl and turkeys, were judged across a number of classes.
