Entry Requirements

A consignment of at least 200 prime lambs must be processed as an entry through the Castricum Brothers processing plant. Prime lambs must have a live weight of 45-70kg (approx. 20 – 32kg carcase weight).

Prime lambs must be first or second cross only. No rams or cryptorchids permitted.
Wool to be no longer than 50mm and free of seed, burrs and dags.

To book your lambs in for a processing date, contact Matthew Castricum on (03) 8791 2222 or via email at matthew@castricum.com.au Castricum Brothers reserve the right to refuse any consignment which is not fit for slaughter.

Judging Process

Developed by Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA), VIAscan is an electronic carcase evaluation system utilised in objective prime lamb carcase assessment and feedback systems within a growing number of Australian processing plants. VIAscan uses colour images to asses the saleable meat yield of an individual carcase and thus provide direct feedback to producers. The VIAscan system is installed at Castricum Brothers in Victoria and entrants in the 2009 RASV Prime Lamb Carcase Awards will be processed at this plant.

The dimensions (length, shape and weight), subcutaneous fat distribution and depth of entries will be assessed under the VIAscan system.

Carcases with an above average loin content will be further rewarded. The value of prime lambs will be determined from a grid based system which incorporates carcase weight, lean meat yield and adjustments for above average loin scores.

The prime lamb carcase entry with the highest ($/kg) and premium $ value on carcase will be determined the winner of the RASV Prime Lamb Carcase Awards.

Entry Fee

$20.00 per entry.

Prize Money

A total cash prize pool of $7,000 is available for the RASV Prime Lamb Carcase
Awards. The winner of the prime lamb carcase competition will receive $4,000, with
a further $2000 for second and $1,000 for third place getters.
