Community invited to get involved in Melbourne Showgrounds master plan

The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV) is developing a master plan for Melbourne Showgrounds to shape Our Showgrounds, Our Future.

The Andrews Labor Government provided $1.5 million to the RASV in 2019 to develop a master plan to ensure the precinct can best serve the needs of Victorians now and for generations to come.

Melbourne Showgrounds has been the home of the Royal Melbourne Show, Victoria’s largest and most iconic annual community event, since 1883. Since this time Melbourne Showgrounds has grown into Melbourne’s largest and most versatile indoor/outdoor space for events, exhibitions, music festivals, exams, television production and much more.

The Our Showgrounds, Our Future plan will identify how the site can be improved to maximise its potential as a centre for agriculture, events, exhibitions, and wider community use.

It will look at options to upgrade or replace ageing infrastructure and how to better integrate transport, exhibition, and accommodation facilities into the precinct.

The first stage of the Our Showgrounds, Our Future plan is extensive community consultation, inviting Royal Melbourne Show lovers, residents and the wider community to contribute stories, photos, or videos of their favourite Melbourne Showgrounds memories and ideas for what Melbourne Showgrounds could become.

RASV Chief Executive Officer, Brad Jenkins, is excited to commence the community consultation stage of the Masterplan.

“The master plan will allow our many communities to be involved with the planning process and help set the vision for Melbourne Showgrounds,” stated Mr Jenkins.

A dedicated Our Showgrounds, Our Future website has been created as a platform for the community to come together and help shape the future of Melbourne Showgrounds.

The community is encouraged to complete an online survey to uncover the best elements of the site, what they would change and to share a ‘big idea’ for the future of Melbourne Showgrounds.

This first stage of the Our Showgrounds, Our Future community consultation will be open until late June.

Melbourne Showgrounds attracts around one million visitors per year including for the Royal Melbourne Show and contributes to the estimated $430 million* in economic value that the RASV generates for the state of Victoria.
