Why Should I Enter?

From saddle horse and riding classes to show jumping and harness horses, the all-encompassing Horses in Action competition takes place during the Royal Melbourne Show each year.

The Royal Melbourne Show Horses In Action Competition awards a number of prestigious trophies, including the coveted and historic Garryowen Perpetual Trophy. There is also generous cash and product prizes to be awarded to the best riders and horses. 

Those who visit the Show ring during the competition will see a variety of striking breeds on display, from Clydesdales to Shetland ponies. 

The catalogue of results will be available on the RASV Horses in Action webpage immediately after the competition. Major award winners will also be recognised in the following year’s schedule. 

2019 Highlights 

Garryowen Equestrienne Turnout – Celebrating 85 years on Wednesday 25 September

The 85th anniversary of one of Australia’s most celebrated horse show events, the Garryowen Equestrienne Turnout will be held as part of the competition, taking place during the Royal Melbourne Show. Some of Australia’s best female show riders will compete for the Royal Melbourne Show glory, a place in history and a share in over $10,000 in cash and prizes. 


FEI World Cup - Sunday 29 September

 A true test of athleticism and skill as riders and horses tackle a world-class jumping course that is recognised as a World Cup Class MER Event that contributes towards riders qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics in July 2020.

Both athleticism and skill will be tested at the FEI World Cup Jumping course. With obstacles up to 1.60 metres high, Australia’s best show jumping riders and horses will battle it out to win the 2019 Royal Melbourne Show World Cup Trophy, a share in prize money and points that will contribute to enabling the overall series winner to represent Australia at the 2020 World Cup Final. 

Horses in Action Competition classes are divided by junior, intermediate and senior riders. Classes added in 2018 include Racing Victoria Off the Track Spring Fashion at the Show for Ladies and Gents, Leading Rein Show Hunter Ponies and Standardbred Harness.

This year, exhibitors can look forward to an improved Show experience, with more space for the Horses in Action precinct at and a new timetable. All exhibitors will also receive unlimited entry to the Royal Melbourne Show for the full 11 days and access to the RASV Stockman’s Lounge
