Good Hands Trophy for boys

First presented in 1949 This Good Hands trophy is for riding skills for boys aged under 15. Competitors first ride their own horses but then the finalists have to ride each other’s horse to win. Eileen Bartram gave a trophy for a good hands competition for girls in 1947 and then decided to do the same for boys. In 1949, the first year of the competition, Barry Chapman from Dandenong High School won. Barry had to be under 15 to compete, so he must have been a terrific horseman as he also came second in the Men’s Riding Competition. Mrs Bartram was a great supporter of the Royal Melbourne Show. It was a family tradition. Her father, Mr R. G. Hunter of Elmore, was an exhibitor at the first Royal Melbourne Show.
