Signs of the Prince of Wales
The distinctive lion’s head handles probably come from the rampant lion, standing on back legs, that is a feature of the Prince of Wales’ coat of arms.
The trophy was first presented when King Charles III was the Prince of Wales. He was given this title in 1958 and his investiture was held in 1969. It may be that the idea for this trophy began in 1969 and was ready for presentation in 1971. The current Prince of Wales is Prince William.
Show-ring jumping a popular attraction
Prior to the First World War, show-ring jumping contests became a drawcard in agricultural shows across Australia. Jumping contests were very popular in the 1920s and 30s. Popularity and prize money meant that owners and riders could earn a living from the sport.
Most show jumping stopped during the Second World War. When Shows commenced again in 1946, show jumping contests using European-style obstacles became popular.
